Intro to This Resource

What is COIL?

Collaborative Online International Learning, or COIL, is a virtual exchange approach whereby faculty from different cultures or countries collaborate to create a shared module around a shared inquiry question which their students undertake collaboratively in binational teams. COIL modules generally: are incorporated into courses that are already part of a curricula; take place during the semester; contribute to course requirements; and can range from 3 weeks to the entire semester in length. See SUNY’s COIL Center for more information.

What are Open Educational Resources (OER)?

OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge. (Source: Open Educational Resources: Breaking the Lockbox on Education).

Using OER resources in COIL projects advances the mission of both COIL and OER by giving faculty and students access to global learning and resources without a hefty price tag. This project serves to expand and scale both OER and COIL across CUNY in two ways: it serves as an introduction and guide for faculty who are conducting a COIL exchange, and it provides a repository of templates that faculty developing COIL exchanges can adopt and adapt.
